The UK Skilled Worker Visa: Sponsorship, Salary, and What Actually Matters

The UK route is simple to describe and hard to execute, because everything depends on one thing: finding an employer with a sponsor licence.

By Fastrack Immigration8 min read

The UK Skilled Worker visa replaced the old Tier 2 route and is now the main way for overseas professionals to work in Britain. Unlike Canada or Australia, the UK does not run a points-based pool you can enter speculatively. You cannot apply without a job. That single fact reshapes the entire strategy.

The four things you must have

  1. A confirmed job offer from an employer holding a valid UK sponsor licence.
  2. A Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) issued by that employer for your specific role.
  3. A role at or above the required skill level, with a salary meeting both the general threshold and the going rate for that occupation.
  4. English language ability at the required level, proven by an approved test, a degree taught in English, or nationality.

How to find a licensed sponsor

The UK Home Office publishes a register of every organisation licensed to sponsor workers. It is public, searchable, and updated regularly. This should be the first document you open, because applying to employers who are not on it is wasted effort no matter how well qualified you are.

Filter the register by your sector and location, then approach those employers directly. In your application, state plainly that you would require sponsorship. Recruiters appreciate the clarity, and it prevents you reaching a final interview only to be rejected on a technicality.

Understanding the salary requirement

There are two salary tests and your offer must satisfy both: a general minimum that applies across the route, and the specific 'going rate' for your occupation code. A role can pay well above the general minimum and still fail because it falls short of the going rate for that particular job.

Certain circumstances allow a reduced threshold — new entrants to the labour market, roles on the shortage list, and some public sector occupations. These discounts are precise and worth checking properly rather than assuming.

Bringing your family

Skilled Worker visa holders can normally bring a partner and dependent children, who can work and study once in the UK. Dependant rules have tightened in recent years and vary by route, so confirm your eligibility before making family plans.

The path to settlement

The Skilled Worker route leads to Indefinite Leave to Remain after a continuous qualifying period, provided you continue to meet the requirements. This is the main reason the route is worth pursuing despite the sponsorship hurdle — it is a genuine path to permanent status, unlike most Gulf employment visas.

Costs to budget for

  • The visa application fee, which varies by length of stay and whether you apply from inside or outside the UK.
  • The Immigration Health Surcharge, charged per person per year of the visa — for a family this is often the largest single cost.
  • Your English test and document translations.
  • Travel, initial accommodation, and proof of maintenance funds where required.

Where applications go wrong

The most frequent problems we correct are a mismatch between the job description and the occupation code chosen by the employer, a salary that meets the general threshold but not the going rate, and English test results from a provider that is not on the approved list. All three are avoidable with a review before submission.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move to the UK without a job offer?

Not on the Skilled Worker route — a sponsored job offer is mandatory. Other routes exist for exceptional talent, graduates of certain universities, and family members, each with their own criteria.

How long does a UK Skilled Worker visa take?

Decisions on applications made outside the UK are typically issued within a few weeks of your biometrics appointment, with priority services available at additional cost. Securing the job and Certificate of Sponsorship takes far longer than the visa itself.
